The Tuner Table lamp from DelightFull is handmade in brass and aluminum, and available in many finishes. It was time to imbue goods with a sense of luxury. Art Deco employed elaborate craftsmanship and a return to handmade approaches to production. The 1920s and 30s, saw a modernist style develop that was striking in its use of geometric forms, but leveraged a philosophy opposite to most modern sensibilities. The Chinoz lamp from Parachina is an example of a fixture that could fit in with this era. Asian art influences also crept into the visual aesthetic. You’ll find all examples mentioned in our portfolio.įlourishing in between the 1890’s and the beginning of the First World War, this is considered the first international industrial design movement, inspiring designers in both Europe and North America to create early modern table lamps adorned with intricate patterns, that were inspired by nature, employing mass production methods. The following list comprises a highlight of the evolution of 19th and 20th century design movements, along with examples of brands and table lamps who have either been influenced by an era or have worked directly within the period. The sequence in which it evolved speaks to the technological innovation and sensibilities of the particular era, as each movement responded to its predecessor. Modern table light design spans movements and decades. The significance of this transformation in the way we see the world cannot be overstated. Within a year of development these bulbs were being mass-produced and distributed. The invention of the contemporary table light fixture came about in 1878 with the design of Thomas Edison and Joseph Swan’s incandescent bulbs, which were both residentially applicable and commercially viable. Yet for these reasons we may also take this fixture format for granted, under-estimating the decades of design history that have carried it to the present day. As such, they may also be the first and last encounters we have with light fixtures each day. Their scale is smaller and they are usually located in the most accessible locations, from nightstands to work tables to dining tables and credenzas, and often positioned at eye-level while we are seated and comfortable. Table lamps are perhaps the light source with which we relate to most intimately.

For this type of financial management, Quicken is still the only consumer-targeted personal finance software game in town. There may be better cash flow and budgeting software (Banktivity and YNAB, for example), but these apps fall short, in my view, of keeping tabs on the intricate accounting treatment for the variety of obscure transactions that flow from owning stocks, mutual funds, stock options, and employer-granted restricted stock. With all its shortcomings, Quicken is still superior to any other personal finance program on the Mac if you need robust investment tracking. Let me be clear about something before I get into what’s changed in the latest version of Quicken. I chose the high-end version because I needed the investment accounting and tracking features. I planned to run parallel systems between Mac and Windows, but that became too much effort, so in January 2017, I switched entirely to Quicken Premiere for the Mac. I finally took the leap in 2016 after Quicken 2017 for the Mac was released, and initial feedback was mildly positive for the first time. Each year I would await the latest incarnation for the Mac, only to be disappointed by the one-star feedback of early adopters on the Mac App Store. Instead, I used a virtualized version of Windows inside the Mac to use Quicken. Back then, Quicken on the Mac was too basic for my needs. I switched over to Mac for most things almost twenty years ago, except Quicken. Quicken for Mac – An Evolutionįor most of my time on Quicken, I used the Windows flagship version of the program. With this background and financial situation, I have had many opportunities to evaluate and tug at the boundaries of Quicken as a personal finance program, particularly on this evolving Mac version of the software. I’ve always tried to be disciplined when it comes to money, a natural-born planner, and I’m comfortable managing my own finances. My work for a publicly-traded company for the past twenty years has allowed me direct experience with stock options, restricted stock units, performance shares, deferred compensation plans, and a variety of employee benefit programs that follow that kind of employment. My finances mirror those of many mid-life families eyeing retirement: a half-dozen investment and retirement accounts, college savings accounts, a home, etc. I began my career in public accounting, and while I no longer provide accounting or auditing services to clients, I’ve held a CPA license here in the state of Washington for over thirty years. If you’re a Quicken Windows version thinking about switching over to the Mac, this review should be useful. Unlike other written reviews of Quicken software, my recent experience is exclusive to the Mac platform, though I will make feature comparisons to the Windows version. In this post, I’ll share an update on how it’s gone using the latest version, Quicken 2020 for Mac. I wrote about the process of switching from Windows to Mac here.Īs I wrote then, I had very high expectations for the Mac version under new leadership, independent of Intuit, and the financial benefit of a new subscription-based business model. I have been using Quicken to manage my finances since 1989: first on the Mac, then a long stint on the Windows version, before switching back to the new-and-improved Mac version four years ago. Welcome to my third annual review of the personal finance software, Quicken for Mac. You’ll actually see one of the only filming locations in Alabama at the movie’s beginning. If there are no lone electron pairs on the central atom, the electron pair and molecular geometries are the same.Ĭlick here to see the various molecular geometries.Ĭhoose the correct molecular geometries for the following molecules or ions below. Step 4: The molecular geometry describes the position only of atomic nuclei (not lone electron pairs) of a molecule (or ion). * Lone electron pairs are represented by a line without an atom attached. We review their content and use your feedback to keep the quality high. Who are the experts Experts are tested by Chegg as specialists in their subject area. The table below shows the electron pair geometries for the structures we've been looking at: The electron pair geometry for ClF 3 is and its molecular geometry is. The regions of electron density will arrange themselves around the central atom so that they are as far apart from each other as possible. Use this number to determine the electron pair geometry.Įach bond (whether it be a single, double or triple bond) and each lone electron pair is a region of electron density around the central atom. Step 3: Add these two numbers together to get the regions of electron density around the central atom. The valency of chlorine (Cl) is dependent on the other atoms to which it is bonded. As it is known that chlorine (Cl) can have more than one valency. Thus, ClF3 is T-shaped, having the axial FClF compressed from the angle of 180°, which is a formal sp3d hybridization. Make sure you understand why they are correct. We can describe the molecular geometry in terms of atoms, but not electrons. The correct answers have been entered for you. How many lone electron pairs are on the central atom in each of the following Lewis structures? Step 1: Count the number of lone electron pairs on the central atom. Molecular geometry can be predicted using VSEPR by following a series of steps: In other words, the electrons will try to be as far apart as possible while still bonded to the central atom. The theory says that repulsion among the pairs of electrons on a central atom (whether bonding or non-bonding electron pairs) will control the geometry of the molecule. The valence shell electron-pair repulsion theory (abbreviated VSEPR) is commonly used to predict molecular geometry. Lewis structures are very useful in predicting the geometry of a molecule or ion. That leaves one equatorial, and 2 axial, sites where the Cl-F bonds can go, which leaves you with a T-shaped geometry, rather than a trigonal planar structure. Many of the physical and chemical properties of a molecule or ion are determined by its three-dimensional shape (or molecular geometry). Therefore, the interactions are lowest in the equatorial environment, so this is where the lone pairs go. In an equatorial environment however, only 2 bonds/lp's are at a 90 degree angle (the axial ones), with 2 at 120 degree angles. In an axial environment, there are 3 bonds/lp's at a 90 degree angle (the equatorial ones), with 1 at 180 degrees (the other axial one). In a basic trigonal bipyramidal structure, you've got 2 environments, an axial and an equatorial one: Therefore, to minimise the energy of the molecule, the lone pairs need putting in whichever position minimises their interactions. In a lone pair (lp), the average position of the electrons is closer to the central atom than the electrons involved in a covalent (in this case Cl-F) bond, so they have a slightly greater repulsion to other lone pairs (or bonds), than a bond does.

In the 1980s the Star-Telegram pioneered the establishment of an electronic information service and built one of the most modern newspaper printing and distribution plants in the nation. The second (1985) was the coveted gold-medal Pulitzer for meritorious public service it was awarded for a news series that exposed a flaw in Bell helicopters that was a factor in numerous crashes over a seventeen-year period. The first was in 1981 for photographer Larry Price's photos of Liberian officials being slain by a firing squad. Under Capital Cities, which later became Capital Cities/ABC, Incorporated, when it purchased the ABC television network in 1986, the Star-Telegram won two Pulitzer Prizes. The circulation at that time was 235,000 daily papers and 224,000 on Sundays. The paper was sold in 1974 to Capital Cities Communications, Incorporated. The paper, an active participant in the Fort Worth community, supported numerous local causes as well as efforts to create Big Bend National Park in far west Texas and to establish Texas Technological College, now Texas Tech University. Carter was majority owner and publisher of the paper until his death in 1955, when he was succeeded by his son, Amon G. In 1954, WBAP-TV also did the first colorcast in Texas, at a time when there were no more than 100 color television sets in Fort Worth and Dallas. In 1922 the paper began the first Fort Worth radio station, WBAP, "We Bring A Program." The Star-Telegram established the first television station in the southern half of the United States in the early fall of 1948 and did a remote broadcast of President Harry Truman's whistle-stop campaign visit to Fort Worth. Carter and the paper successfully resisted takeover attempts by William Randolph Hearst, who sold the Fort Worth Record to the Star-Telegram in 1925. The Star-Telegram had a preelectronic distribution area of 350,000 square miles, and daily home delivery as far as 700 miles west of Fort Worth. The new paper, known as the Star-Telegram, began publication in 1909, and was later identified in the 1920s by a phrase on its masthead reading "Where the West Begins." Carter and the paper stressed local news and served eighty-four counties, with some papers delivered in the Panhandle by stagecoach. By 1908 the Star was in financial difficulty, and Carter and Wortham decided to buy out their rival, the Telegram, an evening newspaper that dated back to the Fort Worth Evening Mail and the Fort Worth Mail Telegram and other papers beginning around 1879. The Star was first published in sixteen pages for a 4,500-copy free delivery. Dawson they also had the help of wholesale grocer and major investor Col. Now it opens in a browser, once opened it goes to a bunch of useless info, then you have to click on another spot to get paper that doesn’t work to well. The Fort Worth Star was founded in 1906 by a group of newsmen including Col. It was simple then just click on the app, up popped the paper and it downloaded and I could also download it for offline use easily. I was a home delivery user until the printed paper price got to be so expensive that I went to the e-print form. It is a major disappointment that will make me reconsider keeping the star telegram. It want let me move around the page easily either. I can no longer just click on the continued on page to go to the end of story. Not to mention the app works terrible inside the browser. Simply put when I use the app I want to read the paper not have to go to several option to get the paper. Now it takes you to an internet browser filled with useless info.
